LISBON VS. PORTO: HUNTING LIGHT
2024
In seeking to understand how Portugal had come to be known as a magnificent city for photography I decided to explore this on my own in the fall of 2024. It did not take long for this suspicion to be confirmed.
Without wading too deeply into the truly deep history of Portugal, one of the most fascinating features that I discovered upon arrival was that the nation has only been considered independent of authoritarian rule for the past 50 years, following the Carnation Revolution. One result of this transition was the emergence of new artistic and cultural communities. Thanks to the increased visibility of creative works in the public the city of Lisbon has taken on an adaptive model of a living work of art.
I suggest reading the poems of Fernando Pessoa, or one of his several iterations, to get a better understanding of the city, as well as the magic of remaining open to finding art hidden around most corners.
Porto:
Porto's appreciation on Baroque architecture and classic tile work is everywhere and is home to numerous still-standing examples of some of Europe's best examples of the era.
